Keeping Ecologically Safe While Cleaning at Home
Keeping Ecologically Safe While Cleaning at Home
If you’re like most of us nowadays, you have lots of choices in cleaning products at your disposal. As you probably know, though, many of these useful products are capable of doing more damage than good. They often have chemicals and compounds in them that could be dangerous to your good health and the environment. Fortunately, there are many natural and green products on the market that are safer to use in your home. Following are some of those products and the kind of jobs that they can do best.
Vinegar. Vinegar is one of the best natural cleaning products you can get, and it is inexpensive. If you use it where its strong odor is not a problem, it’s ideal for cutting through grease and removing stains. If you want to clean glass, vinegar and crumpled-up paper do a great job of leaving a streak-free, clean shine.
Lemon Juice. You can get this natural product by just squeezing the juice from a lemon, or you can get it bottled fairly inexpensively. It can help get perspiration stains out of clothing and it cuts grease like nothing else can. Lemon juice is also used as a natural substitute for harsh chemical bleach.
Borax. Next time you need a bleaching cleanser, try using borax. Borax is a mineral compound that kills bacteria and mold. In addition, it can remove stains from clothing and fabric. Although it is natural, you should keep it out of the reach of animals and children.
Bread. A couple of slices of plain bread left unwrapped in your refrigerator will absorb any odors.
Salt. For cutting through grease or for those times when you need a mild abrasive for a cleanup task, ordinary table salt is a perfect natural substance to get the job done.
Herbs and Oils. Instead of using commercial air fresheners from the nearby grocery, try natural oils and herbs as air fresheners. They are great for making your home smell fresh. You can just put your favorite aromatic herb in a pot of water and let it simmer on the stove for a couple of hours and your home will smell great.
Baking Soda. This is just about the most versatile and useful cleaner that you can use. It is a very soft abrasive and with a little water on a soft cloth it can give a nice shine to most surfaces. Besides doing a good job of cleaning, it also removes stains, softens fabrics and deodorizes. Just open a box of it in your refrigerator or other places where odors are a problem. It will remove the odor and leave a fresh scent.
These are the most popular natural cleaning agents that most people have in their kitchen or can get readily from the food or convenience store. When you keep your home clean and safe the natural way, you will be helping both the environment and your family without making any big changes in the way you like to live.
