Keep A Green Lawn Without Harming The Environment
Keeping Your Lawn Looking Nice Without Harming the Environment
Regardless of where you are, it seems that every neighborhood has that one house with an uncut lawn that is slowly dying. If that describes your own lawn consider the tips in this article, because when your lawn has an ugly appearance your house looks the same. The two are related and it does nothing for your home’s value. Take a look at these quick tips for keeping your grass green and the value of your property green as well.
Grass Needs Water
It is a common misconception among homeowners that grass must be watered daily. The problem? It is not only wasteful but it also harms the roots of the grass. The suggested amount of watering is two or three days a week. For each cycle, let the water run for approximately 30 to 60 minutes so the roots can drink in all of the nutrients and be drawn deeper.
Your Lawn Needs Nutrition
You need food. Grass needs food too. Just like we need four square meals every day (Well, OK, three then), lawn grass needs four square meals a year. A good fertilizer is a necessary part of taking care of the grass and it isn’t that hard to keep on schedule. Feed the grass around June for the summer, September for the fall, in November before the snow starts and around February or after the snow melts. If you don’t have snow to work around in your part of the world, too bad, but the four-times-a-year schedule works about the same way. This will provide the grass a balanced source of nutrition that will have it springing with green once the weather starts to warm up.
Trim? A Rule for the Length of the Grass
You will hear lots of differing opinions about what length the grass should be. It may vary based on the variety of grass. Though experts will each give a varying opinion, a good rule of (green) thumb would tell you to keep it at about 3 inches in length. This will allow for each blade to keep its moisture more efficiently allowing you to water it less. If you like to have it longer or shorter, though, you can but be careful if it’s short that the roots do not get dried out too quickly each time.
You Need to Be Sharp
You probably take it for granted that your mower blades are sharp since you know they can hurt you, but they might not really be as sharp as you think, and dull mower blades can result in a dead-looking, unhealthy lawn. This can happen when the grass isn’t being cut, but instead it is being torn. That can provide entry to harmful organisms and it is harder for it to grow.
Let Clippings Lie Help the Soil
Not very often do you find such an easy solution to a problem and it decreases the work as well. So, here’s one. Probably one of the dreariest parts of the job is raking and picking up the clippings from the yard after you mow. Not only is that job usually unnecessary, but it is often beneficial for the grass if you don’t do it! Here is a tip you might not have taken into account: the clippings are a natural fertilizer and protective mulch. So unless you leave huge piles and chunks of leftovers all over the yard, it’s often best to leave the small clippings where they fall and respect their passing gracefully. Some extra effort may be required after a few years to remove accumulated material in the event that it builds up.
These easy tips can help you to have a better lawn without too much work, so you can enjoy a pretty lawn. By just following these simple steps, you will be doing your part for the neighborhood.
