As the town is surrounded by hills, its weather is somewhat distinct from the rest of Attica – the climate is typically Mediterranean and resembles that of the Aegean Islands with relatively mild winters and hot dry summers. There are many ancient sites and temples that you can visit, just a short drive away. They include: * the impressive temple of Poseidon in Cape Sounio * the temple of Artemis in Vravrona and the museum * the burial mound and museum of Marathon, and of course • the Parthenon of Athens and the many museums. There are new excellent transport connections by road and metro making it very easy to visit the above sites, museums, the Athens flea market and the following festivals: * Athens Festival, held at the magnificent ancient open- air theatre of Herod Atticus Odeon (built in 161AD). The programme includes symphony orchestras, classical drama and dance, and operatic performances. This continuous series of events is held each evening during the months of June to the end of September. * Lycabettus Hill Festival. The programme includes contemporary jazz, pop, rock and dance shows.
